VEAP: A GI Bill-style Program-- GI Bill Tip #10The Veteran's Education Assistance Program (VEAP) ran between 1977 and 1985, with troops contributing nearly three thousand dollars each toward their veteran education. The Department of Defense's contribution to each servicemember was double that number. Similar to the GI Bill, those who enrolled in VEAP have ten years to use the funds once they retire or separate from active duty. Contributions to VEAP were replaced by the current GI Bill program (VEAP ended in 1987). Those on active duty under the current GI Bill program are eligible for VEAP, as the program was cancelled. Those who were eligible between '77 and '85 are still able to draw their benefits money, and did not lose them just because the military switched to the current MGIB plan.
