Don't Use the GI Bill When Other Programs Can Help!

-- GI Bill Tip #6

As an active duty service member, you may wish to use GI Bill education benefits towards online education in programs such as the ones offered by the University of Phoenix. Before you commit to using your MGIB, check into what service-specific education program your branch of the service may offer. You might be able to save your GI Bill for later, depending on which programs your branch of the military is running.

The Air Force, for example, offers tuition assistance for online coursework. If you applied to the University of Phoenix using Air Force tuition assistance, you might get funded for up to $250 per credit hour. It's important to double check the rules of each particular type of education benefits.

One example: Air Force rules forbid you from getting tuition assistance in order to pursue a degree lower than one you currently hold. When in doubt, check with a base education office counselor for more information. The counselor can give you the proper forms and deadlines for filing.
